There are plenty of simple steps you can take to make your home safer:

• Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house
• Keep keys out of sight - and out of reach from a letter box or other opening
• Use lights on timers to make it look like your home is occupied, even when it's not
• Keep ladders and tools stored away.
