Suzanna Locke Apprenticeship

Suzanna began her housing journey in 2017, successfully transitioning from a role in care and support to become an Estate Assistant. The move was driven by a desire for variety, and Suzanna found that the dynamic nature of housing, where no two days are ever the same, was the perfect fit.

Suzanna’s apprenticeship journey in housing

From care to housing: a career in progress

Eager to enhance her career development and deepen her knowledge of the housing sector, Suzanna decided to pursue a formal qualification. The Level 3 apprenticeship in Housing and Property Management offered the ideal opportunity to build expertise while balancing work commitments.

The structure of the course allowed Suzanna to integrate learning into her routine seamlessly. Sessions were held once a week or fortnight, supplemented by time for research and assignments. The engaging content covered everything from the history of social housing to operational processes, which she could immediately apply to her role.

Overcoming challenges and building confidence

Returning to formal study after many years was a challenge, especially with academic referencing and formatting. However, the experience proved invaluable in building Suzanna’s confidence. The course helped her understand the 'why' behind key housing processes, giving her a clearer perspective and reinforcing her ability to tackle complex tasks.

Suzanna credits the support of her colleagues, manager, and tutor for her success. Her manager provided guidance on systems, processes, and valuable feedback during tutor meetings. Suzanna’s tutor, Amada, was instrumental in keeping her on track, offering tailored support and flexibility to address challenges as they arose.

Achievements and looking ahead

Completing the apprenticeship was a milestone for Suzanna, reigniting her passion for learning and inspiring her to pursue further qualifications. She is currently halfway through a level 4 ASB and Community Safety apprenticeship and plans to start the level 5 course soon after.

With aspirations to specialise in Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB), she is determined to use her knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact and progress to a higher-level role.

Suzanna recommends further study to anyone considering it. “It opens doors for career advancement and fosters personal growth and confidence,” she says. The apprenticeship stood out for its practical, on-the-job learning approach, enabling Suzanna to apply her new knowledge in real-time and see immediate results.
