Ewa’s shared ownership journey with NCHA
Shared ownership is an affordable way to buy a home of your own. NCHA's customers have written about their experiences in a series of case studies, to explain what shared ownership has done for them.
Finding independence and a fresh start
At NCHA, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, comfortable home — and for Ewa, shared ownership provided exactly that.
As one of our newest homeowners at a development in Ashbourne, Ewa has embraced her new beginning in a two-bedroom end-terrace home. Her story is a reminder of how shared ownership can change lives.
A new chapter in Ashbourne
After a divorce, Ewa transitioned from a five-bedroom family home to a more manageable space for herself and her teenage daughter. She purchased a 40% share of her home for £88,000, using proceeds from her previous home sale, while paying rent on the remaining share.
“At first, the size was a shock,” Ewa admits. “But we love it — it’s easier to clean, the rooms are really spacious, and it just feels right for us.”
Ewa quickly fell in love with her new home’s bright, welcoming atmosphere.
“There are lots of windows because it’s an end terrace, so I get lots of light in the house,” she says. “I have a small garden, which is perfect because I’m not a gardener, so it’s easy to maintain.”
Her home is not only practical but thoughtfully designed for everyday convenience. “I can park my car behind the house and come through the garden into the kitchen with my shopping — it makes life easier.”
Financial freedom and security
As a self-employed cleaner, securing a mortgage wasn’t an option for Ewa, but shared ownership made buying a home achievable.
“I couldn’t get a mortgage because I didn’t earn enough, but I was able to put down 40% in cash from selling my previous home,” she explains.
“Buying the house makes me feel like an independent woman — I have a secure home I feel safe in."
While still adjusting to monthly bills, Ewa feels confident in her decision and grateful for the opportunity to own a home again.
Community and connection
One of the biggest joys of her new home is the sense of community.
“The neighbours are super nice. We’re already planning events,” Ewa shares. “The houses are nice and very smart, and the location is amazing — it backs onto countryside where I can walk the dog.”
Living locally means Ewa and her daughter stayed close to friends and her daughter’s school, helping to make the transition smoother.
A brighter future with shared ownership
Ewa’s story highlights the life-changing potential of shared ownership. It’s not just about buying a property — it’s about gaining independence, security, and a fresh start.
“I love it. I’m really happy,” she says simply — a statement that captures the heart of why we do what we do at NCHA.
If you’re considering shared ownership, Ewa’s journey is a lovely example of how it can provide a stepping stone to a brighter future, no matter your circumstances.
