New homes unveiled on William Carter Close

We have completed a new affordable housing development off Mansfield Road in Alfreton with an official opening event.

This new scheme called William Carter Close has transformed a previously unused area of Alfreton, bringing 34 much-needed, quality homes for rent near the vibrant town centre.

The event was attended by new residents, GEDA Construction and members of the Alfreton and District Heritage Trust who shared the significance behind naming the development William Carter Close after Alfreton’s forgotten man.

William Carter, born in 1830 on Colliery Road in the town, went on to become a pioneer of knitted goods. The company he established in the United States still exists today and is one of the largest producers of children’s clothes.

Allan Fisher, NCHA’s Director of Development and Sustainability, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “We’re thrilled to be providing much-needed quality affordable housing in Amber Valley. The mix of new homes will support local families in housing need by providing highly efficient homes.”

A range of homes, including one-bed maisonettes, two, three and four-bed houses have been designed to benefit local people. All have been fully let through Amber Valley Borough Council and managed by our housing team.

The homes have been built sensitively and with energy efficiency in mind. Built by GEDA Construction and designed by Pelham Architects, the homes have been given an energy rating of 'B'. Energy efficient and with low carbon emissions the homes offer new residents highly insulated cavity walls, gas central heating with efficient boilers, and electric vehicle (EV) charging points.

This £6.5 million initiative was made possible through a collaborative funding effort with Homes England, which aligns with our Strategic Partnership for 2021-2026, aimed at delivering affordable housing across the East Midlands.

Chris Stinson, Associate Director at GEDA Construction, expressed his pride in the entire team involved in the project. He stated, “Throughout the construction process, we collaborated closely with NCHA and key stakeholders to ensure the project was completed on time and within budget. The site presented several complexities, which we successfully navigated in partnership with Pelham Architects and consulting engineers at William Saunders.

Our project delivery team demonstrated exceptional engagement and pride throughout the construction phases, resulting in outstanding build quality. I am truly delighted for everyone who contributed to this achievement.”
