Older residents get moving!

Getting fit at Muskham View

For the last 18 months residents at Muskham View have been getting fit and active, thanks to fitness instructor Adam Savage from Gorilla Man Fitness services.

With Adam leading the way, residents have enjoyed classes including boxing, sparring, and resistance bands, football, badminton, and dumbbell work.

Keeping active

In the heart of Newark, Muskham View offers independent-living flats for people over 55. The classes have been a great way for residents to spend time together and keep active.

George Desantis, 70, said: “I’ve got really bad hips, I suffered from prostate cancer and a fibrillation of the heart, and these classes really help me.

“We’re getting old, and we’re just trying to get on with it. When Adam comes, we all have a bit of a laugh and get the muscles to work.

“People should exercise so they don’t lock themselves in their little cocoon and wither away, I’m always trying to keep active, and Adam is a great help with that.”

Julie Adlard, 64, suffers from arthritis and fibromyalgia and has noticed a difference in her body since she started attending Adam’s classes.
She said: “It helps keep my bones and joints moving, so it keeps me active. It makes me feel happier.”

Improving balance and coordination

Falling is one of the biggest challenges as people age, and Adam raises awareness of exercising to improve balance, coordination and strengthen muscles.

Sally Anderson, 91, one of the eldest participants, has a special interest in boxing and ring throwing, to keep her arms strong and moving.

Patrice Forbes, 89, said she can now reach her cupboards and carry shopping bags without pain since she started attending the classes.

Improving mobility

Adam explains: “Seeing people smiling and being able to do the moves more and improve is the main thing for me. It is very important to keep exercising as people grow older, it improves their health and they should live longer with fewer illnesses.”
