Meet 'Sarah'
Sarah (not her real name) was supported at one of our Derbyshire Wish refuges, after fleeing domestic abuse.
Despite the challenges life has thrown at her, Sarah impressed her support workers with her determination and drive to make a better life for her and her children.
Those who know her describe her as “the definition of a success story”.
“I need to get up and go”
After years of abuse, she final plucked up the courage to leave her partner:
“I knew from the moment I left that house that I was done. And that I was never going to have to face that abuse, that over-medicating, that mental torture. I knew from that moment that me and the kids were going to be safe.
“[At refuge] you get a whole new life – and it’s great!”
16 days of activism
Today, the international day against violence against women, marks the beginning of the UN’s 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
At our domestic abuse support services in Derbyshire and Nottingham, we’ve helped countless numbers of people flee abusive situations, and go on to lead independent lives, free from fear.
We also offer support to any customer who’s concerned that they, or someone they know, may be living with abuse. Find out more about the services we offer.
