Supporting diverse communities
In 1991, we opened Ashiana and Basera, two independent living schemes for Asian elders. They were the first of their kind for the region and offered culturally appropriate accommodation for people with a similar heritage.
Manjeet moved to Ashiana 13 years ago after being ostracised from her community. Her life has improved dramatically as a result.
In 2009, Jason joined Asiana as a Support Worker, and now oversees both schemes in his role as Scheme Manager.
Manjeet explains how Jason helped her to settle in at Ashiana:
“Jason, the Scheme Manager, supported me and slowly encouraged me to come out and talk to the other residents.
“We look after each other so much here. Sometimes if I need help with ordering a taxi, another resident will do it for me, and during lockdown I would cook food for people and leave it outside their doors.
“The first time I ever went to a party was here at Ashiana – we all shared food and cake and had fun.”
Since then, we’ve continued to prioritise our ambition to support people from a diverse background.
Overseen by colleague and customer representatives, equality, diversity and inclusion is a key corporate strategy. It’s embedded in all that we do and we’re committed to making sure everyone is welcome at NCHA.
