How to get home contents insurance

As your landlord, we cover the buildings insurance for your home, but you’re responsible under the terms of your tenancy for insuring your contents. It’s always a good idea to shop around for a policy that will give you the cover you need.

Home contents insurance isn’t compulsory, but it’s a good idea to consider what a policy would cover. Home contents insurance can help protect your possessions from risks such as fire, theft, water damage, and many more household issues, giving you peace of mind.

What contents insurance covers

The National Housing Federation works in partnership with Thistle Insurance Services Ltd. (Thistle Tenant Risks) who offer the ‘My Home Contents Insurance’ scheme. It’s designed specifically for residents in social housing, and all NCHA customers are eligible to apply.

Depending on what you agree under your contact, this policy may cover items such as:

  • Furniture
  • Carpets
  • Curtains
  • Clothes
  • Bedding
  • Electrical items
  • Pictures
  • Ornaments.
